The Archangels

The Bible is silent about the original creations of angelic beings and does not indicate the time of their creation. However, with what the Bible does reveal (as developed in a previous section), it is clear that they are created beings. As already established, angelic beings are not eternal beings, it is impossible for them to be self-created, just as it is impossible that “chance” created them. God created them! Further, we can surmise that God created them before He created the physical universe. Apparently these beings were present when God created the physical universe, and they rejoiced in the awesome display of power that they witnessed, and gave praise and worship to the Creator. As we proceed with this study, the only authoritative source that we will turn to is the written revelation of God in the Holy Scriptures. This session explores what the Bible reveals of the Archangels. Only three angels are recorded in Scripture by name. One of them is Lucifer who led the rebellion of angels against God and became known as Satan. Michael is the only angel identified as being an Archangel. Gabriel is not identified as an Archangel but appears to be an angel of very high rank in God's hierarchy of the Heavenly Host. Very little information is given in the Scripture of these high ranking angels but we will explore what is given explicitly and what seems to be implied by the details. A very brief side excursion will summarize what are thought in the popular mind to be “Guardian Angels.”
