Christ's ministry to the believer brings great freedom. Not that we can live as we wish according to the lusts of our flesh, but that we are free from the many works that many say we must do to be right with God. That was the situation in the first century that true believers, even Gentiles, had to 'do' what was required by the Law to be acceptable. In reality those things were shadows of what Christ would eventually accomplish.
