The King's Easter Song

77

Psalm 2 "The King's Easter Song" is an Easter hymn written by a king about the King. It is a song worth studying and reflecting upon if you would understand both Easter and its meaning today.
I.The conspiracy. Vv. 1-3
A. The conspirators: the great ones of the world and their followers.
B. Herod, Pilate, the Sanhedrin, the Jews and the Romans. Cf. Acts 4
C. The reason for the conspiracy: rebellion against God's rule.
D. This conspiracy is still going on today among the wicked.
II. The response. Vv.4-6
A.God laughs at their feeble attempt.
B.God frustrates them.
C.God sets up His King, the Lord Jesus.
D.God continues to laugh in scorn at the attempts of the wicked to deny the Lordship of Christ.
III.The declaration. Vv.7-9
A. Made by the risen Christ.
B. I have been installed as the Davidic King. Cf. Rom.1:4; Acts 13:13ff
C. The extent of His reign is universal.
D. The intent of His reign is submission.
E.Today Christ reigns as the King of kings and Lord of lords.
1.Subduing us to Himself.
2.Ruling and defending us.
3. Restraining and conquering all of His and our enemies.
IV.The exhortation. Vv.10-12
A.A word to the wise.
B.Bend before the Lord in reverent submission and you will be happy.
C.If you refuse to bend you will be broken in the day of Christ's wrath.
D. Will you bend or break before the King of glory?
Conclusion: in spite of the wicked world's opposition, God the Father has set up Jesus as King before whom all must either bend in submission or be broken in pieces. On Easter Sunday the Father installed the Son as King. Will you bend or break before this mighty King?
