Outside the Camp with Jesus

43

Special purification offerings, including that of the Day of Atonement, had two special requirements. First, the blood was taken into the tabernacle and sprinkled before the veil. Second, the priests who normally ate a portion of the offering were forbidden to eat of this offering. It was burned outside the camp. This offering typified the offering of Jesus Christ for the sins of His people.
The Priests of the Old Covenant were forbidden to eat of the sacrifice to show that this offering could not save and that those representing the Old Covenant were excluded from the benefits of Christ's offering (Hebrews 13:10). Because it fulfills the requirements of God, being the answer to the type, New Covenant believers are required to "eat" of it (John 6:54-56).
