The Reign of Death and the Hope of Life

In contrast to the lineage of Cain, Seth's offspring belong to the LORD and live by faith in his promises. Their genealogy is a testimony of God's faithfulness to preserve a people for himself, through which the serpent-destroying Messiah would come. Though fruitful in children and long-lived, they remain subject to sin's wages. Death reigns over even the faithful. Yet one of Seth's descendants, a devoted prophet named Enoch, escapes death's cold grip and finds life in the presence of God. Such life is promised to all who hold fast to the promises of God and anticipate the rest that he alone brings through his Son.
