Cessationism

89

Systematic Theology - Lesson 109 - The Doctrine of the Church: Spiritual Gifts - Cessationism - Ephesians 4:11; 2 Peter 1:16-21. The miraculous gifts served the purposes of authenticating the message of the Apostles and revealing truth to the church before the completion of the New Testament. Cessationism is the view that the sign gifts (performing miracles, speaking in tongues, etc.) and the revelatory gifts passed away when the foundation stage of the church ended. The foundation of the church consists of the Apostles and Prophets with Christ being the Cornerstone. With the completion of the canon, the foundation is laid. There is no need to add to the foundation and no other foundation can be laid (1 Cor. 3:11), so there is not a need for either authentication of ministry (outside of the self-authentication of Scripture) or of new revelation, since no one is to add to or detract from the Word received (Rev. 22:18-19).
