Christ's Final Passover Desire

What a remarkable statement by our Lord Jesus the night He was betrayed: "With desire have I desired to eat this passover with you, before I suffer."

The Passover was the celebration of the lamb slain to save the children of Israel the night they left Egypt.

But Jesus was fulfillment of all those old testament types and shadows. He is God's Lamb, provided by God Himself, that takes away all the sin of His people!

Christ's death provides, not just temporal salvation from slavery in Egypt, but eternal salvation from God's wrath.

All the time Jesus was growing up, everytime He saw a passover lamb slain, He knew that was His fate at Calvary - that He was the end of the lambs being slain.

He desired to bring about the completion of that which was pointed to by the Passover. He desired to celebrate it one last time, before He suffered the ultimate penalty for our sins, and brought in an everlasting salvation for us.

He would be ringing out the old types and shadows and celebrations and feasts and bringing in the glorious reality of God's Salvation for us!

As in the Passover celebration, so in the Lord's Table, God announced the remembrance and celebration only hours before the salvation appeared! He set up the commemoration even before the execution of His glorious plan!

Israel was told they would celebrate a soon-to-be-accomplished rescue by God. We were told that we should celebrate a soon-to-be-accomplished redemption by Christ on the Cross.

Even though Christ's death was detestable to Him, and He wept bitter tears at the thought of it, yet He was zealous to accomplish it, and desired that we should have supreme confidence in it, and rejoice in it!
