A Well Stocked Home

Our Lord's reference to homes in this verse pictures us as being householders. We are like owners of houses where there are various items, tools, books and resources which are there for our use and the use of others. We are able to lay our hands on them when required. This is connected to the other description of the Christian as a scribe, well-versed in the secrets of the kingdom of heaven. If we know how to enter the kingdom by being born again; how to live in the kingdom as a subject; and how the kingdom reaches its fulfilment in the coming of Christ, then we are more knowledgeable than all the unbelieving experts, despite their qualifications. Neither is it academic knowledge but practical knowledge that helps with day-to-day living.

The better scribes we are, the better our house is stocked with treasures, old and new. Our house is therefore better stocked when we are students of Scripture. We are to study all Scripture – not just the parts we find easiest to read. We must make it a habit so that new things are opened up to us or old things find a new application. We are then better equipped against sin and temptation and have help in trials such as illness. We must avoid letting our houses be empty but strive after being excellent scribes with our lives well-stocked with Scripture.
