Purity, Tradition, and Devotion to God

Ritualistic purity was very important to the Pharisees, and they confronted Jesus about the failure of his disciples to adhere to oral tradition around hand washing. Jesus, in turn, confronted the Pharisees about their lack of true to devotion to God, their sophisticated rationalization of disobedience, and their failure to understand that purity is a matter of the heart.
