Two of the main characters in the story as it develops in the Book of Esther now come to the fore, Mordecai and Haaman. We hear of the special providence that sees Mordecai 'in the right place at the right time', and Haaman gain greater prominence in the government of King Ahasuerus.

As there was opportunity for Mordecai, there may be spiritual opportunity for us, to do the right thing, that ultimately may serve the purposes of God. Likewise, we see revealed that Haaman was an Amalekite, descending from those who were the natural enemies of the Jews. He was thus an enemy of God's people, and today there are enemies of the Gospel who make it their business to do what they can to do harm to Christians. Mordecai remembered the historic paths, he recalled the old paths, so we too must hold fast to our faith in God, and not bow down to God's enemies in our own age.
