Introduction

• Idolatry – A Systemic Problem in Jeremiah’s Day (Jeremiah 10:2, 8)– A Systemic Problem Today
• Not just a Roman Catholic Problem – Idolatry has Infiltrated Many Protestant Churches
• The One Born of God Keeps Himself from Idolatry (Go to Point I.B.)

I. What We Know to be True – Two Aspects to Doing this: (vs. 18-20)

A. (Last Week's Sermon) What the person born of God knows concerning himself in contrast to the world (v. 18-19)

B. What the person knows concerning Jesus Christ (v. 20)

  1. The Son of God has Come (v. 20a; 4:2; 5:7; 4:14; Ephesians 1:3; Revelation 5:9)
  2. Has Given Us an Understanding – so that We May Know (v. 20b; 2 Corinthians 4:3-4; Ephesians 2:1-3; 1 John 5:5; 1 Corinthians 2:12, 14):
    a. Him Who is True (v. 20c; John 14:6; Acts 4:12; 1 Corinthians 1:30)
    b. That We are In Him who is True (v. 20d; 2:5, 1, 24, 27; 3:17)
    c. This is the True God and Eternal life (v. 20e; John 1:1, 14; Hebrews 1:3; 2:9; John 14:6; 11:25)

II. A Commandment the Flows from What we Know (v. 21)
• “Little Children” (v. 21a)
• Keep from Idols – Any thought that is Contrary to What is Revealed in Scripture Concerning Jesus Christ and the Worship of God (v. 21b; Exodus 20:4-6; 1 Corinthians 10:13; Romans 12:19-21; 2 Timothy 2:26; Jeremiah 10:10)

Conclusion and Application

• Be Ever Vigilant to Keep from Idols
• Continue in the Spiritual Worship of God by true Faith in Jesus Christ – in Every area of Your Life – which we learned throughout this First Epistle of John
