Passover and the Lord's Supper (#1)
Series Passover and the Lord's Supper
Introduction
I: A CLEAR CONNECTION
A: Lord’s Supper is instituted in the Passover setting. (Lk. 22:1ff)
B: Jesus used elements already employed in the Passover Feast. (Bread of Affliction and Cup of Redemption/Blessing)
The Cup of Redemption, also called the cup of blessing or Ha-Geulah was a remembrance of God’s promise that He will redeem His people. The Jews used this cup to symbolize the blood of the Passover Lamb. Umberto Cassuto
II: A STUDY IN BIRD WORDS
A: Bird Imagery (Ruth 2:12; Ps. 36:7; 63:7)
B: Pasach: carries with it the idea of protection by way of covering.
Isa. 31:5 “Like birds hovering, so the LORD of hosts will protect Jerusalem; he will protect and deliver it; he will spare and rescue it."
“Like birds flying, so the LORD of hosts will hover over Jerusalem; hovering over, He will deliver it; He will cover over it and lay over it.”
C: The Hebrew “atonement” also carries the idea of covering.
III: A FITTING PICTURE
A: The LORD Himself is our covering (Ex. 12:23; John 1:29; 1 Cor. 5:7)
B: Parallels to Passover Night
