God's Wrath Exhausted

436 ( 138 | 298 )

At the beginning of his ministry Jesus went out to the wilderness in the power of the Spirit. Here, at the end of his earthly ministry he is sent away to the 'wilderness' again– this time utterly alone...
bearing the sin of the world, where, after three hours of utter darkness, we hear him cry "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

David wrote - "I have been young, and now am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken," (Psalm 37:25) but here we see just that – Jesus, the Holy and Righteous One forsaken by God.

In this cry upon the cross we see God's grace, holiness and love, colliding at full pitch in this action of God in and upon Christ on the cross. In this cry, and only in this cry, we may begin to fathom what it meant for Jesus to be the Lamb of God who takes away the sin
of the world, and what it really means when we say - 'Jesus died for me'.
