A Legacy of Glory and A Legacy of Shame
Series Matthew's Gospel
Whenever and wherever these verses are faithfully read and/or preached, prophecy is being fulfilled. Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, poured out a pound of spikenard upon Jesus' head and feet; a fragrant oil that was worth a year's worth of wages. In the midst of the Apostles' displeasure and criticism of her for this lavish and extravagant display there was One who was greatly pleased with her selfless act of love. For Mary had discerned something about the Lord Jesus that the others had missed: He was about to die. In view of Jesus pouring out His blood, which is of infinite worth, pouring out her precious oil of spikenard was the least Mary could do. How much is Jesus worth to you? Is there anything too lavish or extravagant for Him?
