What is Prophecy? - Who are These Prophets?

Prophets went from Jerusalem to the growing church in Antioch. Moved by the Holy Spirit, Agabus prophesied the coming of a famine, as a result of which, Christians in Jerusalem determined to send ‘relief' to their brethren in the region of Judea.

What is Prophecy? Is it a ministry for everyone? True prophecy was given following direct revelation from God. The message was infallible, all of it, as God does not get anything wrong. It was if you would have it, God speaking through His prophet. Prophecy could not be of a private; or personal interpretation. The content of the prophecy was sometimes revealed by God in a dream or a vision. It was always divinely inspired speech.

The nature of Prophecy was to foretell, to declare, give warnings, promises and insights. The prophet did not always understand everything, and the message given was not always for his time. The coming of the Messiah was the subject of much of OT prophecy. Indeed we can see Christ spoken of in all the Scripture. The true prophets message always came to pass, and was sometimes authenticated by signs and wonders.

Is there prophecy today? Well, the Canon of Scripture is complete; everything we need to know concerning Christ is revealed in the Word of God. There are also warnings in the Bible about adding to, or taking away from, God's divinely inspired revelation. We would therefore conclude that with the coming of Christ, and the passing away of the apostles; there are no true prophets today.
