Progressive sanctification. This is what this chapter is about.
Or, to be more precise, the believer’s motive for his
progressive sanctification. We are talking about the believer’s
life of godliness, his growing in grace and the knowledge and
likeness of Christ, being increasingly conformed to Christ
(Heb. 12:14; 1 Pet. 1:14 – 2:3; 2 Pet. 3:18, for instance). This
is both his privilege and his duty. Moreover, it is God’s end in
saving him. And all is designed for God’s own glory (Rom.
8:29)
