Waiting on the Lord

God had promised Abram that he would have his very own son and through him God would make Abram into a great nation with descendents as numerous as the stars in the sky. As Abram's wife, these promises applied to Sarai as well. But by the time we get to chapter 16, it has been 10 years since Abram and Sarai received this promise from God, and they still have no child.
Sarai was growing weary of waiting for God to fulfill His promise. So she decided to take matters into her own hands. She came up with a plan.
Instead of patiently waiting for God to fulfill the promise in His own way and in His own time, she approached Abram with the suggestion that he have a child by her Egyptian servant Hagar.

  1. The Reality of Waiting - Following Christ involves waiting on the Lord. V1-3
Why? Why does God make us wait?
A = waiting is for our good and waiting is for His glory.
Waiting is how God builds the image of His Son into our lives.
  2. The Importance of Waiting – Failure to wait always results in disaster. v4-6
  3. The Grounds for Waiting – The Character of God
Our confidence to wait is in the character of who we wait for. We could discuss many attributes of God that encourages us to wait on the Lord, but today I want us to consider just three.
    • God sees
How do I know that God cares? Because He promises to help! The second aspect of God's character I want to highlight this morning is…
    • God helps

Turn to Isa 40
God will help you to wait on His promises.
Finally as we wait on the Lord, let us consider this third truth about God
• God keeps His promises

We can wait in confidence because God never lies and will always keep His promises.
