II. The Establishment of the Kingdom 8:1-8

A. Samuel sets his sons up as Judges in Israel 8:1-3

Samuel was a man of unquestioned integrity. However, his sons were not the same. They received bribes and perverted justice. Samuel seemed to have a “blind spot” toward the sins of his children. In Samuel's example we can see that sometimes good men have bad children.

B. The Cry for a King 1 Sam 8:4-6

    1. It was Samuel's error to put his sons in a position of authority, when they were not worthy of that position and abused their power.

    2. “Thou art old” is not a valid grievance.

    3. Give us a king 'like all the nations'.

C. The all too Familiar Pattern Continues 1 Sam 8:7-8
