Why don't we use the altar anymore?

The Bible plainly declares that we are to pray, and we do, sometimes. We take up our prayer requests and we make a good solid effort to at least at some point during Sunday school. Many make sure to pray before they eat and we will even pray a number of times during church. However, there is one time that is seemingly falling out of favor with God's people and that is at the invitation to come to the altar to pray. Now we are not here trying to force anyone to make their way to the altar, but don't we use the altar as much as we used to?
