Eutropius: A Sermon by John Chrysostom

This is a sermon by John Chrysostom preached in the late 4th century. Eutropius was a slave who ruthlessly rose in ranks to become second to the Roman Emperor in the eastern empire. When he had reached the pinnacle of power, he was suddenly banished from the palace; had to flee for his life; and was hurled into the lowest depths of degradation. He sought refuge in John Chrysostom's church building from state authorities.
