John's purpose in writing is to lead people to personal faith in Jesus Christ as the Messiah, the Christ. That is what he wants to do. So when you walk through any portion of the Gospel that John has written you should recognize that he is trying to lay in front of you the evidence that will persuade you that Jesus is the Savior. At the same time remember that Jesus himself has a purpose, and that purpose is to reveal God the Father as the God of grace and truth. So there is always that kind of double action and you want to be alive to that as you read the scripture.
