When Faith, Hope & Love Become Toxic

This sermon was preached immediately after the UK General Election which took place on Thursday, 8th June 2017. The election was won by the Conservative Party, but in truth the election brought about a seismic shock in British politics, and amongst the public in general within the United Kingdom. The effects of the decisions made at the ballot box on the 8th of June will continue to be felt for a very long time.

We seek in this address to draw lessons from the events that are described. There are names of particular personalities coupled with an attempted assessment of what might be happening in and through them and why. We are going a little beyond what we would normally cover in a sermon, but needs must when the situation is as it is. Many of the things covered by this sermon cannot remain unaddressed, so our evaluation of unfolding events is encouraged, with our Bibles open before us.

Many of us here in the UK have regretfully, albeit inevitably concluded, that we are a nation that is experiencing the grave displeasure of a mighty and holy God. In other words we are a nation under judgement.

It must be remembered that God Himself has spoken to us, reasoning with us. His own Son declared Himself to be the truth. But when men decide not to retain God in their knowledge (Romans 1:28) we see false faith, false hope and false love, toxic varieties to fill the void.

Friends, we must pray for our generation. We must ask God for mercy. Clear thinking is required of us all. We cannot afford to be complacent. This is our nation. It is under God's judgement. We need to spiritually be at our best to make a difference.
