The Five Points of Calvinism - Part 6 (Unconditional Election)

Since man is totally depraved, does nothing good and does not seek for God, then God has to do something more than offer Himself if any sinner is ever to be redeemed. The good news is that God does do more than offer Himself. He elects and chooses sinners for salvation, changing their hearts so that they will desire Him. And He chooses them unconditionally. There are no conditions that the sinner meets in order for God to choose him or her. God chooses some sinners for salvation and sets His love upon them simply because He desires to.
