Spiritual Drought
Series Series in Jeremiah (2004-2007)
51
Aim: To come to Jesus, the water of life.
Doctrine: The water of life is only poured on contrite, thirsty souls that are willing to sit still and wait on God.
Exegesis: The ''broken cistern'' syndrome: sinners experience a felt need (vv. 1-6); ministers call for God's mercy (vv. 7-9); sinners refuse God's provision (v. 10).
Further application: How to actually relieve the parched soul: first, I must want Jesus' refreshment a lot; then, I must humbly ask God for it.
Key verses: vv. 1-2 ''The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the droughts. 'Judah mourns, and her gates languish; they mourn for the land, and the cry of Jerusalem has gone up.'''
