Why Sing Psalms?

919

There is a big difference between establishing "that" the Apostle Paul commands the Church to sing the Psalms only in its worship and "why" he commands the Church to sing only the Psalms. This message, following up the prior sermon on "that," picks up the "why" question and offers two reasons: the Psalms are divinely inspired and the Psalms are King-led praises. The first point is established from various Old and New Testament passages and provides confirmation for what is already commonly known and acknowledged by Christians. The second point is made by analyzing the institution of the hymnwriting workshop in 1Chronicles 25:1-7 and taking its implications and connecting it up to Hebrews 2:12 where the preacher explicitly asserts that Christ climactically fulfills the Old Testament, typological model of king-led congregational praise, leading and mediating the New Covenant Church in song before the Father in a Kingly act of worship. These two points woven together forge a powerful positive argument for singing the Psalms only in worship, since man-made hymns and praise songs cannot legitimately lay claim to either reason.
