The Baptism and Fulness of the Holy Spirit

Every true Christian has been baptized with the Holy Spirit, but not all Christians are full of the Holy Spirit.

To be filled with something is to be dominated by it, controlled by it, and characterized by it. Some people are full of anger, others are filled with fear or jealousy. And some people are full of wine.

To be filled with the Spirit is to come under the control of the Holy Spirit to the degree that he influences my thinking and feeling and actions so that I more and more reflect the life and thiking of Christ himself.

Sadly, a true Christian can be filled with the Holy Spirit at one point and grieve or quench the Spirit soon thereafter. That is one reason why we need to follow the admonition of Ephesians 5:18 and constantly seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
