The Vast Compassion of the King
Series Gospel of Matthew
Matthew is demonstrating in this section (chapters 14-18) that Jesus does not rule as other earthly rulers. He is compassionate, sacrificing Himself for others. In this story, Jesus heals a young man who is unable to be helped by others. That generation's religious leaders were without faith and twisted in their thinking. Christ's own disciples are weak in faith, not believing in His authority. And the young man's father is not even sure Christ can help. Yet, Christ heals the young man, though perhaps He has every reason not to - every reason, that is, except that Christ cares. We must realize that when Christ helps us - whether for salvation or deliverance from sin in sanctification - ultimately it is not because our faith was strong enough, or because we were so good or faithful. It is only because Christ cares.
