I - Jesus Ministers at a heavenly sanctuary 1-5
a) This priest is seating because his work is completed - Vs 1
b) No earthly priest could have this uninterrupted and free access to the very throne of God - Vs 2-4
*Cultural note: the seating of scribes in the Sanhedrin
**Historical note: verse 4 points that Hebrews was written before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD Jesus is the Priest of a Heavenly Tabernacle
II - Jesus is a better priest because Mediates a New and Better Covenant - 6-13
Remember the Context! The Hebrews were struggling with accepting Jesus as Messiah, and were going back into Judaism.
Why is the New Covenant better?
- Because it is enacted on better promises vs 6
The first covenant promises were tied to obedience
The New Covenant is enacted on a promise made to Christ and He kept the Law and then suffered the consequences the Law demanded “It is finished was the cry…”
The New Covenant is a faultless covenant vs 7
The New Covenant is unbreakable 8-9
The New Covenant was promised to the house of Israel:
This New Covenant is unbreakable, because it is tied to Christ
Practical: Gospel imperatives that are based on Gospel indicatives.
It is a personal covenant 11
It is a covenant of grace not of threat 12
CONCLUSION:
A true anecdotal story to illustrate that:
- God forgives, and forgets
- God can do this, because His Son paid the perfect price
- This is what we celebrate in our communion table
- Will you find someone to encourage with those words today?
