Religion is Not Righteousness

We have seen clearly in chapter one that people everywhere are godless, wicked, and without excuse. But what about those people who profess to worship the true God, not idols, and to do so according to the prescription of God's Law? What about people who outwardly conform to all the expectations of the Law and brag about their relationship with God? Can religion successfully replace the personal righteousness that God requires and that we all need?
