This chapter is significant for its revelation of the LORD's objective and subjective work upon the hearts of men. Pharaoh's hard is both hardened,Hebrew chazaq, by the things that the LORD does externally, and is hardened, Hebrew cabed, by the things that the LORD does internally. There is no avoiding the truth, and it offends so many. Romans 9 certifies the sovereignty of God over men. But for the mercy of God there would be none who would or could come to Christ.
