Abigail: A Wise Woman Married to a Foolish Man
Series Through 1 Samuel
189
Continuing the mini-drama of David, Nabal and Abigail - a landmark in David's ascendency to the throne of Israel.
A husband and wife "team", Abigail and Nabal, come in to play a cameo role in the unfolding David-Saul drama.
The chapter's themes:
- death (of Samuel and Nabal contrasted)
- denial(of God and David) by Nabal (the fool)
- delight (in God) by Abigail (the wise).
We see Nabal display the characteristcs of a fool by three estimations:
(1) the estimation of his servants ("He's such a scoundrel no-one can talk to him")
(2) The estimation of David (v 32)
(3) The estimation of his wife (v 25) (Nabal's name means "fool" - and he is one!)
"The fool" is defined in Psalm 14:1-3 "The fool has said in his heart "There is no God".
