God and Caesar
Series Gospel of Matthew
112 ( 58 | 54 )
The attempts to embarrass Jesus have not ended. In a strange alliance, the Pharisees and the Herodians (advocates of Herod's kingship) confront Jesus about the legitimacy of paying taxes to Caesar. Even so, Christians are always confronted with the sticky issues of being a Christian and a citizen. The principle, however, in Jesus' answer remains. By God's appointment, there are times when government is ungodly. Still, whatever can properly be given to it, without contradicting God's laws, must be given. God, however, who is Creator of all humanity, has the first place of all; and whatever is rightly due to Him must be given.
