No Musical Instruments in NT Worship

  1. Biblical Worship is According to the Commandment of God.

The Regulative Principle of Worship versus the Normative Principle of Worship.
(Exodus 20:4; 25:40; Deuteronomy 12:32; Leviticus 10:1-3; Jeremiah 7:31; Matthew 15:6-9; Colossians 2:23).

  1. Musical Instruments were a part of OT Ceremonial Worship.

a. No instruments were used in the the regular worship of the patriarchs or in the tabernacle.
b. Instruments were instituted for and used in regular temple worship.
(Compare 1 Chronicles 13 and 15, especially 15:13. 1 Chronicles 28:11-19; Ezra 3:10-11; Nehemiah 12:27,36).
III. Regulations concerning Musical Instruments in OT Worship.
a. Particular musicians (Priests/Levites).
b. Particular instruments.
c. Particular places and times.
(1 Chronicles 16:4-6; 23:1-6,30; 2 Chronicles 29:25-30).

  1. Christ has fulfilled and abrogated all OT Ceremonial Worship.
    (Many NT passages. e.g. Colossians 2:16-17; Hebrews 9:1-12).
    Instruments, as used in OT worship, are abrogated with all other ceremonies.

  2. Christ has not commanded the use of Musical Instruments for NT worship.

I. No command or example of NT church using instruments in worship.

II.The High-priesthood of Christ and priesthood of all believers is against special musicians in NT worship.

III. NT commands and examples of singing in worship are fulfilled by unaccompanied congregational singing.
