According to Scripture, in what manner does God forgive sin? That is the question.

It should be noted that the sacrament of penance did not bother Luther. The reduction of the penance by priests through indulgences enflamed Luther. Thesis 21, 32, and 33 (of the 95) show that he did not mind purgatory, he was upset with the selling of time off by the priests.

Sadly today, some (like J. I. Packer) should know better, but have gone headlong in ECT and Promise Keepers in undermining the gospel.
