Meditations On The Lord's Supper, Part IV

451

Adam was a type, a picture, of Christ in several aspects. For one, his spouse was formed when the Lord opened up his side.

Jn. 7:38-39: "He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. But this spake he of the Spirit..." The Holy Spirit is symbolized by water, as Christ tells us plainly here.

John 19:34: "But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water."

We know what Christ's blood represents: I Jn. 1:7b: "the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin." And we have just read Christ telling us plainly what water represents: the Holy Spirit. Physical water washes away physical filth; the spiritual water, the Holy Spirit, washes away spiritual filth I Cor. 6:11: "ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God."

Adam's deep sleep, wherein his spouse was formed from out of his opened side, is an emblem of Christ's deep sleep of death, wherein his spouse was formed from out of His opened side. The church is even called His body. We can hear Christ speaking of us in Adam's words: "This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh:" "For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones."—Ephesians 5:30.
