God's everlasting love

86

“Does God love us? Does he love me?”

To answer this question, we identify the declaration of divine love, God’s assertion that he - the High and Holy One - takes intense delight in his redeemed people, unworthy and unlovely as we are in ourselves.

Then we see the nature of divine love: it is everlasting love, from everlasting to everlasting, mirroring the very nature of God, stretching into eternity past and enduring into eternity future. Nothing can break or undo the covenant love that God has for his chosen people.

Finally, there is the expression and evidence of divine love: God’s drawing his people with lovingkindness. This is described and defined in salvation, recognising that God is ever-drawing his elect to himself, onward and upward, until he at last brings ushome. But this drawing is also the evidence of our being loved by God: our experience of it testifies that we have indeed been saved. If we cannot yet say, “I am loved by God” we must pray God to subdue our wills and soften our hearts and bring us to himself with bands of love; if we can, we must praise and bless the Lord our salvation, and glory in his everlasting love.
