Western Culture And The Threat of External Religion

212

We are living in a culture where consumer products have a cult-like following. Society catches onto something; it becomes the popular thing to have and the envy of those who don't have it. In many respects this is where Christianity is today. The benefit afforded society since the official national acceptance of Christianity by Constantine in 313 is innumerable.

Today there is a certain pride attached to Christianity, what we might call “Christian Supremacy.” Throughout the American election campaign conservative voices were raised against a Mormon or someone with loose Muslim associations ever getting near the White House. But we have to ask ourselves what is the basis of that desire for “Christian” dominance.
• Is it based on heritage?
• Is it based on the social benefits that external Christianity has over other religions?
• Is it based on sentimental or psychological pride?
o Or is it because there is a spiritual supremacy of Christianity over other religions of the world; supremacy based on the dichotomy between truth and error, good and evil.

I believe, if properly analysed modern Christianity, much of evangelical Christianity is guilty of this very sin; of holding to an external religious form without true Christian spiritual experience. We are battling Christian supremacy!
