The Impossible Command

Jesus' words in verse 48 are meant to summarize the theme of chapter 5. The Pharisees had eroded God's commands down by their traditions and rationalizations, to the point that they had actually excused actions which broke God's laws. Christ's message throughout is plain: the law stands pure and holy and unbending. The standard has always been God Himself, and we are commanded to measure up to Him.
