The Spirit of Christ Proclaimed Coming Judgment

Who are the spirits? When did Christ do this? Where are the spirits? These are questions that need to be answered to best understand the point Peter was making in this section. The spirit of Christ made proclamation to the spirits of sinful mankind who were living on the earth during the 120 years Noah was building the ark. Their willful and stubborn rebellion was demonstrated by their disobedience to the proclamation being made to them warning of coming judgment. At the time Peter was writing, those people who had heard and rejected the message during Noah’s day were long dead, continuing to live under the judgment yet beyond the original readers down to today. No one man or angel who rebels against God escapes judgment.
