Joseph: Man of Purpose

191

For thirteen years Joseph waited before the Lord brought him to that point where there was a discernable purpose in life. For thirteen years of his life Joseph was on an emotional rollercoaster of persecution and prosperity (all that happened between 37:2 and 41:46; between the age of 17 and 30). He had been despised by his brothers and loved unreservedly by his father. Favoured by his master and slandered by his masters wife. In prison favoured by all, revealing dreams but forgotten for “two full years” by those whom he helped (40:23).

But during those years it is remarkable how constant Joseph was in fulfilling his life. He took no short-cuts to success. He waited on God and was faithful in whatever task lay to hand at the time, whether tending sheep, or running message for his father, or serving Potopher, or a prison warden. Joseph work gladly, and tirelessly, plodding on and whatsoever his hand found to do he did it with all his might.

Why we may ask did he work so? He had faith in the promise of God, this he revealed in his dying wish (Genesis 50:24-25)
• His one purpose in life was to please God.
• His one fear in life was sin (Genesis 39:9).
• His one comfort in life was the presence of God (Genesis 39:2, 6, 21-22).
