Making the Cross of No Effect

30

How do we make the message of the Cross of Jesus Christ of no effect?
1. By wrapping it in the garments of this current age. Clothing it in the trends lines of the latest fads as if we have something to market to intellectual consumers instead of something to declare to desperate sinners.

One Christian leader has recently assessed the evangelical church of our day under the title, “The PR-driven church” stating that, “Somewhere along the line, evangelicals bought the lie that the Great Commission (to preach the gospel of the cross) is a marketing mandate. Therefore The larger evangelical movement today is obsessed with opinion polls, brand identity, market research, merchandizing schemes, innovative strategies, and numerical growth. Evangelicals are also preoccupied with matters such as their image before the general public and before the academic world, their clout in the political arena, their portrayal by the media, and similar shallow, self-centered matters.”
2. The cross is made of no effect by turning into a sacramental symbol like baptism. It is not a symbol to bow before. It is not to be used to provoke your sympathy at the physical pains of Christ and move you into a moment of religious fervor. It is a truth to believe and embrace. Christ has died and risen for your salvation.

  1. If it is preached by anyone who has not come under its claims and answered its call. It says, “Come unto me”… it says, “Look to me alone and believe on me.” If you try to cover up this cross with elaborate rituals or require the intellectual comprehension of long and complex creeds in order to bow before it… It will lose its effect. It has power when we have like child
