Strengthening the Believer's Faith by Looking to the Lord Jesus

The Lord Jesus gave to Peter the power to walk upon the sea - and so Peter was able to obey the command of the Savior to come to Him across the water.

But Peter doubted when he saw the waves and felt the wind boisterous against him. Perhaps he doubted God's power to finish the work He had begun in Peter. Such doubt is foolish and goes against everything Jesus had shown to Peter, including the fact that he was there and then walking upon water!

God constantly calls upon His people to remember His former works of power on our behalf! How often He exhorted Israel to recall His mighty acts! Yet they "limited the Holy One of Israel," and trusted not in His power.

Perhaps Peter forgot, when he saw the waves, that it was God's power, and not his own, that was behind the work he was doing. He saw the waves and felt the wind, and forgot that, though those very forces had thwarted his ability to cross the sea, they were no threat to the mighty power of God!

The Devil loves to drag back into our minds the very difficulties that blocked us, but that God has already overcome. Then we forget that it is not our own strength, but God's working in us.

Peter cried out to the Savior when he began to sink, and the Savior reached out and saved him. The Lord's arm is not shortened, that it cannot save!

Notice that though Peter's faith is weak, yet when he called upon the Lord, the Lord saved him! What a comfort to those who know their faith is weak - but it is not the strength of our faith, but the power of the Blood that saves us!

The best way to strengthen faith is to look to the Lamb. Consider His love and His power. Meditate upon His strong Arm, mighty to save.
