A Church In The House

474

When children grow up, they often reproduce the pattern set forth by their parents’ household. Philip Henry (Matthew’s father) took his responsibility to family worship seriously. He studied to make his teaching both instructive and delightful to his wife, children, and servants. As he expounded Scripture, he encouraged his children to take organized notes, so that by the time Matthew Henry left his father’s house, the seeds of his majestic Commentary on the Whole Bible were already germinating. Alluding to the words written on houses quarantined during the plague, Philip Henry said, “If the worship of God be not within, write ‘Lord have mercy upon us’ on the door; for a plague, a curse is there.”
