Interpreting Scripture With Scripture

167 ( 67 | 100 )

In this class, we will consider the issue of context in a broader way. Each passage of scripture has an immediate context. Each sentence is generally in a paragraph, which is in a book of the Bible. That is the immediate context. The broader context is the context of the whole Bible. Since God never contradicts Himself, then what God says elsewhere in scripture on a given subject, theme or doctrine will have bearing on what He says in another place on the same subject. Therefore, we should always be searching the scriptures to see how other scriptures apply and help us understand the text before us. We call this principle of hermeneutics the analogy of faith.
