A Noble Task

Paul continues to outline the way a New Testament church is to be ordered. He now turns to focus on the office of elder. The church is familiar with a trustworthy word about the office of elder, which highlights the abiding need for a qualified ministry. In these verses, Paul outlines the qualifications for overseers (or, bishops and elders) and does so in a God-centered way. Each quality belongs to our Heavenly Father and is to be rightfully the aim of every Christian. Yet, those who lead should exemplify such a godly character (perhaps even above gifting and intellect). This is for the good of every church and every Christian, for such elders are a gift from Christ to his people!
