The Holy Ghost's Great Cost

86

Christ promised His people the Holy Ghost, Who would reveal all things about the Savior.

Paul explained in Galatians that it was necessary for Christ to redeem His people from the curse of the law by His sacrifice, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit by faith.

We observe that Christ and His Gospel may only be received by the mighty working of the Spirit in our hearts, but that same Spirit could not come to us until the Lord Jesus suffered for our sin at Calvary.

This is because sin places us under a judgment of death, and blinds our hearts and minds to the truth. These are the antithesis of the Spirit's gracious working of righteousness, truth, and life.

The Spirit cannot work life in a condemned sinner, for to do so would frustrate God's Holiness and Justice.

The Spirit cannot work righteousness in a sinner's life, for to do so would make the sacrifice of Christ unnecessary.

But Christ's death clears the way in sinners for the Spirit to operate His mighty work! His death removes the curse, satisfies justice, and cleanses believers of every sin.

This makes the Spirit's work of righteousness and life possible, and no longer contrary to God's decrees.

Further, because of the cleansing of Christ's blood, we are made holy and pure vessels for the habitation of a Holy God! Indeed, the Spirit builds up the people of God into a holy temple for God's presence to dwell in!

We are cleansed by Christ's blood, just as the old temple was cleansed by a sacrifice, and God's glory came down.

So too Christ's Spirit comes to dwell in the blood-washed Saint. Oh the terrible cost Jesus paid to fulfill His promise of the Holy Ghost dwelling in us!
