Why God Hates Pride So Much, Part 1
Series Series in Jeremiah (2004-2007)
62
Aim: To be humble, by grace; and hence be pleasing to the Lord.
Doctrine: God's abhorrence of pride is complete and righteous. Pride caused the fall of men and angels; pride, through its idolatry, seeks to block the Lord's saving grace.
Exegesis: The effects of pride on (religious) sinners: it causes them to rob God of His rightful glory (vv. 1-7); it nullifies all their covenant advantages (vv. 8-11); it calls down God's judgment on them (vv. 12-14).
Further application: Confronting spiritual pride, head on: beg God for a true glimpse of myself and for grace and mercy, in light of my sinfulness.
Key verse: v. 9 ''Thus says the LORD: 'In this manner I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.' ''
