A Thirst Quenched Forever

176 ( 152 | 24 )

Digging is hard work. And digging without any gain is both exhausting and foolish. Yet, we spend much of our lives digging for things to satisfy our hunger and thirst. For some it is a hunger for fame and fortune, for others a thirst for relationship, contentment or peace. But the holes we dig are empty and can hold no water (Jeremiah 2:13). Our digging is futile. We cannot quench our thirst that way.
In our reading from John 4 this week Jesus speaks with a Samaritan woman who is thirsty in more ways than one. By the end of their conversation, she has come to know who Jesus is, has received 'the gift of God' (the Spirit) and her insatiable thirst has been quenched and replaced with a desire for others to come and see Jesus. This is the promise given to all who know Jesus and ask him for 'a drink'. This is the essence of worshiping the Father in spirit and truth.
Are you thirsty? Stop digging... Ask Jesus for a drink, and receive the gift of God.
