Vanishing Beggar's Gold 11

101

She was so irritated! Her mom had been dead for years, she had submitted her mother's death certificate eleven times, and yet, the television company was still demanding outstanding TV license fees!

When we read an article like this, we feel irate that a company can be so insensitive. It is obvious to us that when a person is dead, no law that is in effect has any hold on them. They are free from the demands of the law.

This is exactly how Paul begins Romans 7, using the example of marriage. Death ends obligation to the law of marriage.

Christians may then ask, if we are dead to the law, then firstly, how is plain lawlessness dealt with among Christians, and secondly, what is the point of the law if we are no longer obliged to obey it?

These questions are explored in this message. The law certainly does have a purpose, and in our liberal society the law still needs to speak loudly.

This sermon ends with a word picture that should cement the imagery of this chapter on the mind of the hearer permanently.

May God use this message both to convict you of sin and to bring you to a fresh appreciation for the wonderful saving and sustaining work of Christ!
