Lot - Escape for thy life!

Upon parting from Abraham Lot set his face towards the plain of Jordan in which the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were to be found.

He did not initially intend to live in Sodom but he rather pitched his tent towards Sodom. However, Lot was on the slippery slope and the devil was not going to rest until he got this man into Sodom so that he might ruin his testimony and his family.

Strife arose in the vicinity of this plain of Jordan, Lot was taken captive and Abraham had to come to his rescue. Despite this very timely warning Lot went back to living in Sodom and was soon elevated to be a ruler in the city.

As he sits at the gate of Sodom two strangers appear. These are not ordinary or local men. They are heavenly messengers.

Lot brings these men home to his house. He realised something of their nature and the purpose of their visit for he makes them a meal consisting of unleavened bread, ch 19:13. This has a spiritual and religious dimension to it.

These two men have come to inform Lot that the city is about to be destroyed. He needs to go and warn his family immediately of the imminent danger.

Lot went but was mocked by his sons in law as he told of the danger that the city was in. By the next morning Lot and his family are still in the city, v15,16. They are lingering, reluctant to leave.

The two angels physically take hold of Lot, his wife and his two daughters and brought them forth without the city. Their command to them all is: Escape for thy life….

We want to consider this command to escape for thy life in the gospel tonight.
